I have been producing music for about 8 years. 5 of those years I have a had a better idea of what I am doing which has made all the difference. There are a few things that I wish I knew when I started producing music that I am about to share with you. Get ready to have your mind blown.
First off, you should experiment. Don't be afraid of just jumping into whatever software it is that you own. You can honestly make no mistakes when it comes to being creative.
Next, don't get caught up in the mechanics of sounds. There have been so many times where I worried about a specific sound for hours, then when I try and jump back into the song I am in a different head space creatively.
Make sure that you finish songs! This is probably the biggest production tip I can give you. Having a bunch of unfinished ideas won't help you when it comes to progression. You can use other peoples tracks to see what structure they are using if you are looking for inspiration. Reference tracks are one of the most essential tools when it comes to music production.
