The MTV Video Music Awards are known for high-energy, culture-shifting, WTF moments. From Britney Spears wearing a snake during her "Slave 4 U" performance to Miley Cyrus' nude outfit during her performance with Robin Thicke on "Blurred Lines," the Video Music Awards deliver those moments. One of the most iconic VMA moments took place in 2003 with Madonna's "Hollywood" performance which featured cameos from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot, ended with a 3-way kiss between Madonna, Brit and Xtina. Most recently, Lil Nas X compared his controversial BET performance where he shared a kiss with one of his back up dancers to the iconic moment explaining, "they did it, but no one cared." However, the moment went viral which then meant the story was on the cover of every news paper and discussed on every news station in the early 2000s. People were livid! The moment has gone down in pop culture history but it wasn't as planned.
According to MTV Music Group president Van Teffler, Madonna want to share the kiss with Jennifer Lopez before Britney and Christina. "It was a long road to get Britney and Christina on that kiss because they weren't necessarily the first couple of people on the hit list. This may be the firs time it's revealed but Jennifer Lopez was originally in that mix. But that didn't happen," he explained. "The thing about Britney and Christina is that they have history so it wasn't easy getting them on stage together. They both respect Madonna, so only she could pull that off," he continued. As for why Jennifer Lopez declined the offer: She didn't like the concept and didn't want to wear a goofy wedding dress two weeks before her wedding to then fiancé Ben Affleck (man, those two have come full circle). Honestly, I feel like this performance really projected Britney's career and I couldn't see it going any other way, with JLO either! What do you think? Should Madonna should have tapping Madonna or any other artist!? The 2021 Video Music Awards start Sunday night at 8pm|est on MTV!
